Evolution of Hollywood in the Sustainable Genre

In the recent years there has been a significant rise in concern for the environment. Citizens and organizations are coming together to meet this challenge. We all affect the natural environment, but we are often unaware of to what degree. There is no part of the Earth that is not affected by our collective actions and we all know that the only way we can effectively combat climate change is collectively. Our actions threaten the health of our planet, the land we live and work on, the water supply, the ozone layer, the animal species as well as the health of our species. By making an impact on this we can all meet the moral obligation to act, and take the opportunity to help build a sustainable future for ourselves.

Hollywood is now leading the way in teaching energy efficiency to the country and there are Environmental Friendly Celebrities who support green building, conservation and various aspects of sustainability and alternative energy. Being “green conscious” has become a deeply held cause embraced by many of Hollywood’s elite. A wide array of stars has made it an avocation to champion their favorite environmental and green causes. Many are advocates for every aspect of saving the environment while some lend their names and influence to specific areas.

Part of this quest is the founder of Planet Greenfest and the CEO of Angel Light Pictures Entertainment Group, Antonio Saillant, who has worked on high-level filmmaker’s projects, learning the nuts and bolts of production. He spent years shadowing and learning from his mentor, Ted Kotcheff. Saillant also gained expertise about how the industry works at the studio level from the highly popular television drama series, “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.” Saillant began his producing career by forming Angel Light Pictures Entertainment Group. The company expresses Antonio’s vision and passion for creating energy efficient movies and television.

Known as an energy engineer, now turned filmmaker/producer, he has always been focused on the environmental impact of film/television production. Saillant is furthering the education on green film production with Planet Greenfest, a film festival that his entertainment group is putting together.

The films shown at Planet Greenfest will be shorts, ranging from 3 to 10 minutes long, and are required to be produced using green technology. Antonio says, “I plan to take what I have learned in the energy business and apply it to the entertainment industry in the hopes that my experience will inspire other filmmakers and also our partners, vendors and audience.”

Planet Greenfest is a global film festival competition for filmmakers which supports and cultivates an eco-friendly new way of filmmaking and addresses the core of being green and thinking green by bringing knowledgeable and creative filmmakers together in order to impact and change the world.

Sustainability is right everywhere

Over the last few years, he has been focused on ways in which he could make film sets greener and the films themselves. He hopes to discover initiatives to execute for the next project or film, to reduce its environmental impacts in television and film and make each film “greener” than the last. “The green initiative allows us to set a precedent to continue to produce high quality productions with exacting standards, while minimizing our impact on the environment.”

Understanding sustainability in film and television when the camera is flipped the other way will show behind the scene filming that captures the art of green filmmaking during the filming of each film and television program.

This new concept, Flip the Camera Around, captures sustainability during a film and television production and led Saillant to create an improved way to show the audience that the film or television program can be produced 100% sustainably. Using a sustainable rating system would be the next step for an environmentally friendly method. This method and these tools established finite element methods as a new reference point for believable on-screen-sustainable rating system that will spread a positive sustainable message to audiences worldwide.

A Universal Sustainable Rating System for “Sustainability Leadership in Motion Picture & Television” is currently in development. Saillant’s mission is to promote sustainability in the entertainment community by developing a collective and powerful Environmental Sustainability Rating System [ESR].

The on-screen ESR will provide a positive, sustainable and dynamic vision of the film & television production’s environmental impact, as well as promote worldwide audiences with renewable, clean energy.

The ESR will break new ground to capture a more creative way of bringing the art of green filmmaking from the beginning stages through development and post-production. The ESR will also be applicable to television programming. The goal of this Eco-friendly rating system is to use a “Sustainability Box” to provide an objective standard for determining the environmental responsibility of a film or television program. [Similar to the rating system of the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America)]

ESR will transform the way we think about how film and television are produced, constructed, maintained and operated in a sustainable new world. This modern sustainable rating system incorporates research on sustainability in an innovative friendly way for environmental responsibilities based on its categories.

Ecological choices come from creating and developing film and television programs that aim to be 100% green. This is where third-party certification comes in. It holds studio’s accountable for their claims, and it signals to consumers and audiences how serious they are. Third-party seals of approval can communicate other things as well, such as the values of the company or the class of the product or in this case their film or television program. [Think LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, which is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices] and ESR for Sustainability Leadership in Motion Picture & Television.

A universal sustainability rating system will provide accurate methods for resolving greater strategic and operational goals and objectives. The result will lead to healthier, safer communities and the preservation of the Earth’s bounty for future generations. “The green initiative allows us to set a precedent to continue to produce high quality productions with exacting standards, while minimizing our impact on the environment.”

To learn more about Saillant’s new approach in rating film and television in sustainability he will be announcing, Flip the Camera Around and his idea, ESR during a nationwide presentation starting in April at this year’s Green Festival Expo in New York City and ending in Portland, Oregon in December of 2015. The presentation is entitled, “Sustainability within the Entertainment Business.”

Teach the concept of “Learning from Doing” in film. We are preparing the next generation of green filmmakers to be environmentally responsible, so that all communities will be safe, healthy and the earth’s bounty will be preserved for future generations. We will make ecologically responsible decisions by creating and developing films that are 100% green.

Saillant will select the Green Festivals Expo panel, “Sustainable Solutions in the Entertainment Industry,” The panel will consists of a roster of highly regarded film industry people that are considered Eco-friendly, ranging from producers to celebrities — who will discuss the challenges and opportunities that come with creating sustainability in the entertainment industry in today’s evolving marketplace. Antonio Saillant will moderate.

The Green Festival in Los Angeles will run from September 25-27 and the panel discussion schedule is as follows:

Saturday, September 26

Location: LA Convention Center, 1201 S Figueroa St, Los Angeles, CA 90015

Panel: “Sustainable Solutions in the Entertainment Industry”

Description: Highlight and celebrate advances for creating sustainability within the entertainment industry. This is an opportunity to brainstorm ideas and Eco solutions for studios and all stages of production. Undertake a new systematic approach to influence change in future projects to better the impact of environmental communications in all media. Use these to inform new creative work on multi-media sustainable communications.

Conclusion: Organizations should all continue to promote environmental messaging in the entertainment world. These efforts should be supported, funded and extended to ensure that the sustainability message is embedded in all existing entertainment vehicles.
